Pvt Wayman Seabolt, CSA, was in the 6th Bat. Va. Res. Co. D, and the 1st (or 11th, 13th) Bat. Va. Res. during the Civil War. There is also a Smith's Bat. Virginia Reserves organized June 3, 1864 mentioned in connection with his name. From what information I could gather, Wayman enlisted (or was conscripted) June 16, 1864 in Marion, Virginia. He lived in Smyth County north of the Mc___ Road. He was absent January 26, 1856, sick in Saltville; present April 16th to August 31, 1864; present September and October, 1864 for roll call. A copy of the company history is needed. This can possibly be found at Virginia Tech at Blacksburg, Virginia. Normally the reserves did not see action, but this area was so full of action, the reserves most likely responded to some alerts. By 1870 Wayman and Margaret were in Doniphan Co, Missouri with children, Ellen 20, James 15, America 12, Florence 8, Cynthia 6, as well as Martha Hege and John, a son-in-law. Listed in the 1840 Mo census was Russel Sebolt; for 1850 census of Mo was Albert Seabolt and for 1850 Doniphan Co Mo census was Joseph (317), 1860 census (all for Doniphan Co Mo) was Jacob (318); and also for 1870 there was Joseph, Catherine and Thomas, (all 318). The latter are probably Wayman's son, Thomas, and wife Sarah Catherine Burkett. 1880, Va, Wayman was a farmer, 1900 Va census, Wayman was a teamster, 1910, Va Wayman is not found, but the index is not complete, 1920, Va need to check for Wayman. He would be about 100 yrs old now. Information regarding his death is unknown. Margaret (Gillaspie) and Wayman Seabolt were one of 34 charter members of Graham Baptist Church which was organized March of 1900 in an old store building on the west bank of Mason Creek between 1901 and 1905. At that time they had no pastor but were given lot on the corner of Tazewell Avenue and Walton St. in Tazewell, Virginia. I would love to discover where the records are for this church so that I can check the records for Seabolt data. Early newspapers were Tazewell Republican, Clinch Valley News, Lebanon News. Land records on file at the Tazewell Co Va courthouse record the only official details of the death of Margaret and give details regarding the dispursion of the land according to Magaret's wishes. M. Newlin's Co. in the Tennessee militia in June of 1814 and that he was discharged at huntsville, Alabama. He was in the Battle of New Orleans and served under Col. Smith and Maj. Lonox. The Battle of New Orleans was on 8 Jan 1815 and was the last engagement of the war. A treaty had already been signed, but neither side knew that. British forces of 5300 attacked American forces of about 4500 who were sheltered behind breastworks. Andrew Jackson was there, as he had led 2000 Tennessee riflemen in the attempt to drive the British out. The British were twice repelled and over 2000 of the British soldiers were killed. Only 8 Americans were killed and 13 wounded. This battle was important in that it stimulated American national pride. It was also good publicity for Andrew Jackson, who went on to become our President. Legend has it that Jacob was ship wrecked and was washed ashore, to be found by a friendly couple. They took care of him and when he was well enough, he told his story but could not remember his name. The same Seabolt was said to have been taken because he arrived from the sea like a bolt out of the blue. This may be true, but it was also a favorite story told by those who had been bonded or otherwise detained and wanted to escape to other parts for the purpose of assuming a new identity and a new life. Another Seabolt line says their original name was Bolt, and that to celebrate their new life in America, they added the Sea to the Bolt, honoring the passage across the sea.
