A Veterans Day Salute to My Dad
by Carolyn Gilpin Carver

To the Vet in my life,
Though his own ended many years ago,
This man who helped bring me into this world,
years after W.W.II had ended.
They tell me you went to Germany,
And was there when she finally fell,
I wonder of the days which passed,
Were they slow or fast while you were there?
Did you crawl in the mud,
Like they do in the movies,
Did the bullets come close to you?
Did you dream of your woman, waiting at home,
And your mother at home, all alone?
How did the time go by,
Was it fast, or slow or a blurr?
Were the weeks like months, the months like years,
Was it an eternity for you, before you finally came home?
I wonder, how did it feel?
Did the crowds come to meet your ship,
Did they cheer and wave you welcome home?
Did you feel your chest swell with pride,
Coming home to our free America?
Thank you, dear father, it means so much to me,
To know you were proud to go,
To fight for the freedom of others,
Though today, so many do not understand.
... I wonder, how did it feel?
Dear father, I thank you, I love you.
